Mermaids
This project is part of an exercise from Hiro Kawahara's Animal Anatomy and Biology for Monster and Creature Creation course. The goal was to imagine what a mermaid's design would look like if it actually existed and followed the rules of science and evolution.
Based on that, I came up with two different concepts: one being a herbivorous mammal, and the other a carnivorous fish. In each one, I wanted to work with specific parameters and develop the anatomy and design based on those definitions.
Carnivore: For this mermaid, I envisioned a humanoid creature that falls into the fish category. Therefore, her skin would be bluish, her arms and hands would be used for hunting prey, and she would have no neck, improving her locomotion and aerodynamics.
Herbivore: The other mermaid, on the other hand, would be an aquatic mammal, much like manatees, but much more slender, not submerging as frequently. Another aspect I wanted to include in the creature's design is the resemblance of its head to a human face, thus creating the misleading description of a "fish-woman".
